Kirsten, remembering her brother Paul

Kirsten: Artist Statement

This painting is the Scituate Lighthouse, where my mother and brother used to spend time together. They’d pick up rocks from the beach to paint. After my brother died, our whole family would go visit the lighthouse as a way to remember my brother. We have brought many of our relatives there in his honor and it’s a comforting place for me to go and think of him. For a few years, our family has attended a sunrise vigil at this lighthouse in memory of people who have died of overdose. Below the lighthouse are my brother’s name and the dates in roman numerals of his birth and death. I have these same dates tattooed on me. He is forever 21.
