Lianne, First-Responder

Lianne: Artist Statement

Hawaiian culture has become a part of my daily life and from it, I draw inspiration to share with others. This painting is guided by the principle of ho’omau, the value of perseverance, to persist, to continue, to perpetuate, and to never give up. The ocean embodies this value, continuing in cycles of persistence, with waves that rise and fall, it carries on through and through without end. People often move through a cycle of active addiction to recovery, sometimes relapsing, and then finding their way back to recovery again. As a first responder, we are called to assist people in this process, persisting alongside them, helping them not to give up.
