Jaime, on recovery

Jaime: Artist Statement

My art has several meanings. I chose a rainbow because I came across the quote "IT TAKES BOTH SUNSHINE AND RAIN TO MAKE RAINBOWS" when I was in a jail cell in South Bay. I was at a very low point in my life, and that quote stuck out to me so much. It's true, everyday is not all sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes it's dark, and gloomy. When you're in recovery it's about pushing through in your toughest days, and not giving up no matter what. I did kind of a collage theme of my life, and I included some images of other people that are, or have been in my life that also suffer from the disease of addiction.

I definitely had to put pictures of my family on there. My family supported me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. If I didn't have people to say they were proud of me, or to give me support I don't know if I would've made it to where I am today.  I also included 3 more pictures. All 3 people suffered from this disease. All 3 people are important to me, and I want people to know addicts come in all shapes, and sizes from all walks of life.

I absolutely had to put a picture of my car! I didn't have a license until I was 35, and even then I still had to drive 5 crappy cars before I got this one. I LOVE my car! I put my business card up there because I am proud!! I didn't work, and I didn't ever think I would have a business card!! I am employable today, and I love going to work to provide for my family.

This disease is so powerful, and it doesn't discriminate. I've been sober almost 7 years, and I am never going back.  I am blessed to be alive. I don't forget where I come from, but I stay far away from there.
